This $269,703 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems supports research and education on dense suspensions under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). Specifically, the awardee Brandeis University will conduct collaborative research from February 1, 2023 to January 31, 2026 to develop understanding of microscopic correlations and macroscopic behavior in dense, shear-thickening suspensions. Using discrete-particle simulations incorporating frictional contact, the researchers will explore behavior of discontinuous shear thickening and shear jamming transitions by measuring dynamical correlations and analyzing divergent shear and normal stresses near jamming. They will also investigate continuum descriptions of suspension flow and simulate spatially varying flow mimicking active microrheology. Outreach efforts include exposing basic science concepts through on-stage dramatization in New York City and mentoring undergraduate researchers from underrepresented groups.
