Purdue University received a $452,928 project grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation to develop hierarchical design and additive manufacturing techniques for metallic programmable metamaterials. The goal of the research is to apply laser powder bed fusion to fabricate metallic programmable mechanical metamaterials and understand the influence of hierarchical design and additive manufacturing processes on microstructures, defect density, elastic strain limits and fatigue resistance. The project team will develop an integrated experimental and modeling platform to significantly improve fundamental understandings on manufacturing metallic programmable metamaterials with superior mechanical performance, including large global strain and high fatigue resistance. This research supports the National Science Foundation Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) by fostering innovation in engineering research focused on additive manufacturing and materials design.
