- This National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $734,947 in funding to the University of Rhode Island to conduct collaborative research on the life cycle of phytoplankton blooms in coastal ecosystems. The research team will analyze a unique set of samples and data collected in 2021-2022 to better understand the metabolic, functional, and taxonomic interactions between phytoplankton and associated bacteria that influence the timing and...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $373,910 to San Jose State University Research Foundation to investigate whether Rhizosolenia diatom mats in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre obtain nitrogen from symbiotic nitrogen-fixing microbes. The research aims to better understand the role of these fragile, understudied diatom mats in oceanic productivity and carbon cycling. The award began on January 1, 2025 and is scheduled for...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $561,018 project grant to the University of South Carolina under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research examining three decades of foraminiferal assemblages in the Santa Barbara Basin. Over the three-year period from July 2022 to June 2025, the University will create a thirty-year record of planktic foraminifera abundances from stored samples collected in the Santa Barbara Basin, California....
- The National Science Foundation awarded the University of South Carolina a $844,365 Project Grant under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050) from July 2023 through June 2026. The grant funds collaborative research to quantify the contribution of benthic microalgae to total ecosystem primary production and net primary productivity in the North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina. Researchers will measure benthic microalgal net primary productivity, biomass, community composition and...
- The University of California, Santa Cruz received a $721,442 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to investigate whether the diatom species Rhizosolenia obtain nitrogen, a key nutrient, from symbiotic nitrogen-fixing microbes. This research aims to better understand the role of fragile Rhizosolenia mats in marine ecosystems and their contribution to ocean productivity, as traditional sampling methods often miss these microbial communities. The...
- This three-year project grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program, totaling $739,133, supports collaborative research on sources and transformations of export production from coral and plankton bioarchives. The University of Rhode Island will receive funding through February 2024 to conduct a novel 50-year record of pelagic-benthic coupling by analyzing coral and plankton samples. The Geosciences program aims to expand fundamental knowledge of the integrated Earth system...
- The University of South Carolina will research foraminiferal ecological response to ocean conditions in the Northwest Pacific Ocean under a $377,418 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences. The grant was awarded on April 1, 2021 for a period of performance through March 31, 2024 under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The Geosciences program aims to expand fundamental knowledge and understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research in...
- This $297,369 National Science Foundation award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research evaluating the contribution of small eukaryotes to nitrate-based new production in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Over a three-year period ending November 2025, the University of Hawaii at Manoa will conduct laboratory and ship-based research to better understand how phytoplankton access subsurface nitrogen in surface waters during summer months. Researchers will sort phytoplankton...
This National Science Foundation award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $235,585 to the University of South Carolina from August 2023 through July 2026 to study the ecological and biogeochemical role of Rhizaria in oligotrophic oceans. The project will deliver improved estimates of total Rhizaria biomass across ocean depths from 0-1200 meters through monthly sampling and in situ imaging using an Underwater Vision Profiler. Novel measurements of Rhizaria vertical distribution, environmental niche characteristics, and seasonal variations in biomass and community composition will be collected. Size-specific elemental analyses and seasonally and vertically explicit biomass estimates will be incorporated into a model to quantify Rhizaria contributions to vertical nutrient flux into the deep ocean. Data generated on Rhizaria will be combined with information from the Bermuda Atlantic Time-Series Study and Ocean Flux Program to parameterize carbon and nutrient transfer modeling. Findings will further the program's goals of expanding fundamental ocean science knowledge and understanding of integrated Earth systems.
