This National Science Foundation Project Grant award of $994,610 provides funding from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025 to study ion heating by electromagnetic ion cyclotron and magnetosonic waves in Earth's magnetosphere. The Trustees of Boston University will use the funding to advance understanding of ion dynamics through comprehensive satellite observations and numerical modeling. Specifically, the awardee will conduct a survey of ion heating events using Van Allen Probes data to categorize events by wave properties and plasma parameters. Quasilinear simulations will model ion heating and scattering during identified wave events using observational inputs. Test particle simulations at varying wave amplitudes will evaluate nonlinear ion interactions with large-amplitude waves. This work supports the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) goal of expanding fundamental knowledge of integrated Earth system processes through basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences.
