This two-year, $180,000 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation, under the Engineering (47.041) federal grant program, will support the development of novel cryogenic thermoelectric nanocomposites for refrigeration applications. The University of Maryland, College Park will utilize the funding to research and develop refrigerators capable of functioning at ultra-low temperatures through a new class of CE1-XLAXB6 thermoelectric materials. The grant aims to foster innovation in engineering research and education by enabling refrigeration technologies for applications requiring cryogenic cooling below -150 degrees Celsius. As a public research university and sub-awardee of the parent University System of Maryland, the University will directly oversee and perform the research services funded under this award from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024.
