This $315,957 National Science Foundation project grant will support the development of novel composite barrier materials to mitigate flooding and intercept contaminant transport. Funded through the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), the University of Tennessee will synthesize composites from low-cost waste materials—chitosan, biochar, and bentonite—to create sustainable, adaptive barriers for flood mitigation and simultaneous contaminant sequestration. Over three years, researchers will develop repeatable synthesis methods; investigate physico-chemical binding mechanisms between materials; and assess contaminant adsorption, degradation under varying conditions, and transport parameters through batch and column studies. The project aims to understand fundamental interactions governing contaminant removal and evaluate the composites' chemical and environmental compatibility for containment applications like retention ponds and landfill liners. Outreach to K-12 students, engineers, and agencies will also be supported.
