This $1.5 million National Science Foundation project grant will support Louisiana Tech University in delivering academic and career support services to 40 low-income undergraduate engineering students over five years. Funded under the NSF's Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program (CFDA 47.076), the project aims to increase retention and graduation rates in STEM fields by pairing scholarships with discipline-specific faculty mentoring, professional development seminars, and career readiness activities. First-year scholars will receive up to $37,500 each in scholarship support over four years. Services will be tailored to students' academic levels, focusing first on community-building and then shifting to internships, research programs, and career preparation as scholars advance in their studies. Evaluation of faculty mentoring impacts and the role of academic community in retention are expected to generate knowledge to inform effective practices for supporting low-income STEM undergraduates.
