This $1.49 million project grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will fund the Chesapeake Scholars in the Physical Sciences program at the University of Maryland, College Park over five years from December 2022 through November 2027. The program will provide scholarships and academic support services to 28 low-income, high-achieving undergraduate students pursuing bachelor's degrees in astronomy, atmospheric and oceanic sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, geology, or physics. Scholarship recipients will receive mentoring, research experiences, and opportunities to present at conferences. The goals of the program are to increase retention and graduation rates among scholars as well as their sense of belonging in their fields of study. Evaluation results will be disseminated to scholars and the public.
