- This $491,093 National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences Project Grant supports research evaluating the contribution of small eukaryotes to nitrate-based new production in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The grantees, led by Principal Investigator Granger at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will investigate how phytoplankton access subsurface nitrogen at Station ALOHA in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The researchers will sort phytoplankton by size and...
- This $297,369 National Science Foundation award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research evaluating the contribution of small eukaryotes to nitrate-based new production in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Over a three-year period ending November 2025, the University of Hawaii at Manoa will conduct laboratory and ship-based research to better understand how phytoplankton access subsurface nitrogen in surface waters during summer months. Researchers will sort phytoplankton...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded a $438,331 project grant to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research from April 1, 2023 through March 31, 2026. The research aims to characterize amino acid nitrogen isotopes in phytoplankton and advance understanding of isotopic patterns produced under varying physiological conditions. Investigators and students will explore how different...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $734,947 in funding to the University of Rhode Island to conduct collaborative research on the life cycle of phytoplankton blooms in coastal ecosystems. The research team will analyze a unique set of samples and data collected in 2021-2022 to better understand the metabolic, functional, and taxonomic interactions between phytoplankton and associated bacteria that influence the timing and...
- This $300,785 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports a research project to characterize the chemical composition and bioavailability of dissolved organic matter released by marine nitrifying microorganisms. The project aims to determine how this material contributes to carbon cycling in the deep ocean, which may help improve biogeochemical models and inform potential marine carbon dioxide removal activities. The research will...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) provides $221,015 to the University of New Hampshire from February 2022 to January 2024 to investigate changes in Arctic Ocean phytoplankton and track the vertical export of organic carbon they produce. Working with optical oceanography experts at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the University will analyze data from 2010-2021 field campaigns measuring inherent and apparent optical...
- This Project Grant award of $569,435 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports collaborative research at Northeastern University to investigate the impact of plastic-derived dissolved organic carbon (PDOC) on the ocean's biological carbon pump. The core hypothesis being tested is that bacteria consuming PDOC compete with phytoplankton for key nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, reducing new production and the strength of the biological carbon pump,...
- This $408,738 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports collaborative research to investigate the effects of SUP05 bacterial cells and the viruses that infect them (phages) on nitrogen cycling in marine oxygen minimum zones. The project is led by the University of Washington, and aims to detail the combined impact of SUP05 cells and their associated phages on nitrogen transformation and loss processes in these ocean regions. Through a...
- This $582,005 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports research by The Trustees of Princeton University to investigate nitrous oxide (N2O) consumption in the surface ocean. The research aims to determine the factors that control or stimulate N2O reduction in surface waters and characterize the microbes responsible for the process. Specifically, the investigators will perform 15N tracer incubations to measure the rate of N2O reduction...
- This $665,899 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support a collaborative research project to study the interactions between plastic-derived dissolved organic carbon and the biological carbon pump in ocean ecosystems. The University of New Hampshire will conduct a combination of laboratory experiments, field sampling, and numerical modeling to test the hypothesis that bacteria consuming plastic-derived organic matter compete with...
This $442,689 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research evaluating the contribution of small eukaryotes to nitrate-based new production in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The grantees, led by the University of Connecticut Office of Sponsored Programs, will investigate how phytoplankton access subsurface nitrogen at Station ALOHA in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Researchers will sort phytoplankton by size and pigment composition, measure stable nitrogen isotope ratios of sorted populations, and use metatranscriptomic analysis to study physiological pathways of nitrogen uptake. This work will assess which taxonomic groups use nitrate versus recycled nitrogen sources and test the hypothesis that eukaryotic phytoplankton primarily use nitrate while prokaryotic phytoplankton use recycled sources. Outcomes will help characterize seasonal trends in nitrate supply and primary production in this region to better define dynamics of the biological pump. The award was issued on December 15, 2022 and has a completion date of November 30, 2025.
