This $654,897 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), will fund collaborative research on swash zone dynamics driven by obliquely incident waves. The University of Delaware will lead laboratory experiments, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulations to expand understanding of three-dimensional flow and sediment transport patterns in the swash zone under a range of wave conditions and angles of incidence. Researchers will investigate how bore collapse and flow turbulence drive alongshore currents and sediment fluxes. The project aims to train two PhD students and numerous undergraduates while also providing support for a postdoctoral researcher. It will also support research experiences for four high school teachers and disseminate results via publications and conferences. The research seeks to discover the physical processes governing alongshore flow and transport in the swash zone, which is important for beach sediment budgets but remains poorly described. Insights gained could enhance coastal management strategies.
