This $296,858 National Science Foundation project grant supports research into the dynamics of near-surface ocean velocity structures through the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The University of Maine will collaborate with other institutions to elucidate upper-ocean hydrodynamics using observational data, numerical modeling, and fieldwork. Specifically, the grantee will pair existing high-frequency radar measurements with upward-looking current profilers to investigate the influence of surface gravity waves, stratification, and buoyancy fluxes within the top 10 meters of the water column. The numerical model GOTM will simulate velocity profiles under varying turbulence parametrizations and stratification. Outreach is planned with U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets. This award will advance understanding of near-surface coastal ocean processes to improve model parameterizations and particle trajectory studies. One graduate student and undergraduates will gain research experience over the three-year period of performance concluding September 2025.
