Researchers will explore the origin, evolution, age and longevity of magmas in this region to further understand Iceland's glaciological volcanic hazard potential and gain insight into...
- This $158,481 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support collaborative research by Lehigh University to investigate the relationship between changes in glaciers, topography, and the behavior of active volcanoes in Chile over the past 50,000 years. The research aims to generate high-resolution records of volcanic activity, ice retreat, and landscape evolution, and use this data to explore how crustal loading changes driven...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $385,643 project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Vermont & State Agricultural College to investigate magma diversification and mobilization processes in the lower continental crust. The 3-year research project will link field mapping, microstructural analysis, geochemistry, and geochronology to test competing models for how magmas form and are extracted from the deep roots of continental arcs. The...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $2.8 million project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for the period of October 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026. The project aims to map changes in Greenland resulting from ice thinning and explore emerging landslide and hazard risks. Researchers will integrate local observations from Greenlandic communities with remote sensing data to understand how hazards evolve over time. Advanced...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award of $296,096 to Brown University provides funding to investigate the crust and uppermost mantle beneath active volcanoes using new seismic analysis techniques. The 2-year project, starting on Sep 1, 2024, aims to advance understanding of how magma storage and migration affect the eruptibility of volcanoes in regions like Yellowstone, the Cascades Arc, and the Altiplano-Puna Volcanic Complex. Key...
- The Space Science Institute will conduct research titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: TRANSPORT OF MAGMA IN THE NEAR SURFACE AT SMALL VOLCANOES- EXPERIMENTAL INTRUSION OF BASALTIC MELT INTO UNCONSOLIDATED SEDIMENTS" under a $111,806 National Science Foundation Project Grant in the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The research aims to strengthen understanding of integrated Earth systems through basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Specifically, the Space Science...
- This National Science Foundation project grant of $117,832 awarded on July 1, 2022 will support research into the geological processes that have shaped the continental lithosphere beneath New England through time. Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), the investigators from Williams College and research institutions will conduct seismic imaging of the crust and upper mantle using data from deployments of seismometers in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine....
- This $490,303 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support a research project aimed at improving the understanding of lava flow properties and their impact on volcanic eruption hazard assessment. The key products and services to be delivered under this award include: Developing and deploying two new field tools to directly measure the viscosity of natural lava flows, which contain critical elements like bubbles and crystals...
- This $157,232 National Science Foundation project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund the development of a unified numerical model for bubble nucleation and growth in volcanic systems. Lafayette College will work with international collaborators to conduct targeted experiments and develop theoretically grounded formulations to capture homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation processes. Researchers will also create an ensemble bubble growth model to track evolving bubble...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences Project Grant, funded under CFDA 47.050 Geosciences, provides $180,000 over 2 years starting August 1, 2023 to explore the significance of spatial field data from integrated satellite remote sensing and GPS time series for machine learning and volcanic early warning applications. The project aims to integrate data from satellite radar, GPS, and high-resolution digital elevation models to generate 3D time series of surface...
The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded Lafayette College $476,890 under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) for the project "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: WHAT LIES BENEATH: AN INVESTIGATION OF SUBGLACIAL SILICIC MAGMA SYSTEMS (VATNAJOKULL, ICELAND)" from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2025. The goal of this project is to explore the origin, evolution, age, and longevity of magmas beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap in Iceland to better understand the country's glacio-volcanic hazard potential and gain insight into this geologically unique region. The researchers will analyze samples of silicic materials from nunataks and moraines to map regional distributions and decipher petrogenetic origins and evolution of silicic systems at Iceland's most active central volcanoes, including Bárðarbunga and Grímsvötn. Evidence gathered will facilitate understanding of the role silicic magmas may play at these productive systems obscured by the ice cap and any associated hazards. The funding will also support rigorous research experiences for over six undergraduate students, most from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.
