This $387,765 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at the Colorado School of Mines to develop a solution-based manufacturing process for metal sulfides used in next-generation batteries. The research focuses on overcoming scientific barriers to enable ambient temperature production of metal sulfide nanocrystals through a cascaded metathesis process using sodium sulfide, metal chlorides and sodium chloride byproduct. Characterization of intrinsic properties and structure-performance relationships of solid-state electrolytes and cathode materials will provide knowledge to realize the full application potential of this sustainable approach. As part of the Engineering Directorate's mission to foster innovation supporting U.S. economic strength and quality of life, this award addresses the Engineering CFDA program's goal of improving energy storage technologies critical to renewable electricity deployment and climate change mitigation.
