This two-year, $151,076 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA #47.050) will support the development of a database of high-fidelity synthetic seismograms for incorporation into the Global Centroid-Moment-Tensor Project. The awardee, Princeton University, will work with the Princeton Numerical Seismology Group and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory to adapt the SPECFEM3D_GLOBE spectral element solver to generate synthetic seismograms across a global grid of hypocenters and station locations. These kernel seismograms will be organized, stored, and made rapidly accessible to facilitate earthquake analysis. The Centroid-Moment-Tensor code will be modified to ingest the interpolated SPECFEM3D_GLOBE waveforms, allowing assessment of their impact on characterizing seismic sources and reducing uncertainties in the Project's earthquake parameters. Two graduate students will also receive research training through this collaboration between NSF program offices and other federal partners.
