This $117,414 five-year project grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund the development of an integrated hydrologic model to better understand groundwater dynamics in the Great Lakes Basin. The University of Arizona, on behalf of the State of Arizona, will fuse hydrologic modeling with GPS, satellite imagery, and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data to more accurately simulate surface and subsurface flows. Through data assimilation, the awardee will produce historical and forecast groundwater flow and storage datasets to reveal the spatial and temporal distribution of groundwater across the basin and relate this to fluctuating lake levels. This integrated modeling approach provides an unprecedented view of how groundwater storage affects Great Lakes levels. The results will supply reliable information on surface and groundwater resources needed to support water management in the region.
