The National Science Foundation awarded a $3.6 million Project Grant to Clark Atlanta University under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049) to establish the Partnership for Research and Education in Chemistry-Sustainable Polymers (PREC-SP). The PREC-SP will partner with the existing NSF Center for Sustainable Polymers to conduct collaborative research on sustainable polymers through multi-institutional projects including: 1) Development of porous crystalline catalysts for biomass conversion to polymer feedstocks; 2) Preparation and characterization of polylactic acid and polyhydroxybutyrate nanocomposites reinforced with cellulose nanocrystals; and 3) Synthesis of sustainable block copolymers, functional polymers, and hairy nanoparticles via novel polymerization techniques. The award will also support education and research opportunities for underrepresented minority students and professionals to increase diversity in the sustainable polymers field. The three-year project period began on October 1, 2022.
