The $289,039 National Science Foundation Engineering grant funds the acquisition of a picosecond laser and electroplating system for North Carolina State University from September 2022 to August 2025. The university will use the new equipment to advance device manufacturing and materials processing capabilities in electronics, materials engineering, and biology research. Located in the university's nanofabrication facility, which is part of the Research Triangle Nanotechnology Network, the laser and electroplating system will be accessible to NC State researchers as well as outside users to stimulate inter-institutional collaboration. Capable of cutting and patterning features as small as 20 micrometers in a wide variety of materials, the picosecond laser is particularly suited for heterogeneous fabrication crucial to next-generation devices not easily achievable through conventional techniques. The new equipment will enable research in areas such as tissue-integrated sensors, organic electronics, robotics and actuators, optoelectronic materials, and microfluidics.
