This two-year, $299,997 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at Princeton University to advance methods for quantifying quantum entanglement in molecular systems. The grant is funded through NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program, which promotes progress in these fields and strengthens the national scientific enterprise. Professor Gregory Scholes and his students will develop a formalism using quantum Fisher information to quantify quantum correlations like entanglement observed in molecular chromophores and light-harvesting complexes. As an initial demonstration, they will attempt to measure the degree of quantum Fisher information in transient spectra of model molecular dimers and the LH2 light-harvesting complex from purple bacteria. Insights from this work could guide research to quantify quantum correlations in complex molecular assemblies and enable new avenues of quantum information science and engineering. The award was issued on April 15, 2022 and runs through March 31, 2024.
