This $1.6 million project grant from the National Science Foundation's Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), will fund the development of the CyberShuttle framework. CyberShuttle aims to create a seamless, secure, and highly usable scientific research environment that integrates all of a scientist's computational tools, software, data and resources. This includes resources located on a scientist's personal devices, centralized university systems, cloud infrastructures, and national supercomputing centers.
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign leads this collaborative effort with partners at the University of California San Diego, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and the Allen Institute. Through September 2027, the project will develop an open source software framework called Apache Airavata to enable end-to-end integration of computational science and engineering research across distributed cyberinfrastructure resources. Scientists and engineers will access this system through specially designed user interfaces following user experience best practices.
