This National Science Foundation Project Grant award of $840,000 provides funding from August 1, 2022 through July 31, 2025 to support research activities in string theory at the University of California, Los Angeles. The award is made under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), which aims to promote progress in these fields and strengthen the nation's scientific enterprise.
Specifically, Professors Eric D'Hoker, Michael Gutperle, and Per Kraus at UCLA will conduct research to deepen understanding of string theory and develop its connections to quantum field theory through holography. Their work includes studying two-loop scattering amplitudes of strings and their applications, exploring a bootstrap approach and worldsheet definition of spacetime action in string theory, and obtaining new asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions to supergravity theories with applications to physics of defects, interfaces and superconformal field theories. Results from this research could have diverse applications in physics while advancing basic science in the U.S.
