- This $2,330,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) funds scientists at 12 U.S. institutions to analyze data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica. IceCube uses specialized cameras embedded in the Antarctic ice to detect neutrinos and study the most energetic objects in the universe. This grant allows the continued analysis of IceCube's rich neutrino dataset, enabling new scientific discoveries and...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a two-year, $250,715 Project Grant to the University of Chicago under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). The grant supports the expansion of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) to enable observations of ultra-high-energy neutrinos, which can provide unique insights into the most powerful cosmic ray accelerators and explosive events in the universe. Specifically, the funding will be used to improve drill...
- The National Science Foundation Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences awarded a $238,177 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049) to the University of Kansas Center for Research Inc. on December 1, 2022 for completion by February 28, 2025. The grant funds the development of a prototype Radar Echo Telescope station in polar ice to establish radar detection as a technique for observing ultra-high energy astrophysical neutrinos...
- This $148,000 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), will support the expansion of the currently operating Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) to enable observations of ultra-high-energy neutrinos. The project aims to further advance the understanding of the most powerful cosmic ray accelerators and explosive events in the universe through...
- This $325,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) will support the expansion of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) to enhance its sensitivity in detecting ultra-high energy neutrinos. The funding will enable the construction of new modular stations with antennas and data collection systems, as well as the drilling of deep holes to host the equipment. These enhancements will increase RNO-G's...
- This $374,122 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (CFDA 47.049 - Mathematical and Physical Sciences) will fund the expansion and enhancement of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) to improve its sensitivity in detecting ultra-high energy neutrinos. The award will support building new modular antenna stations and infrastructure to enable the observatory to function reliably for 10 years, gathering critical data on neutrinos that can advance our...
- This $300,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program supports research on the interaction of neutrinos with their background particles and with each other in astrophysical environments. The award was made to the University of Wisconsin System's University of Wisconsin - Madison division, operating as Research and Sponsored Programs, with a performance period from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2027. The key research...
- This Project Grant award, valued at $171,330, was provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences to the University of Wisconsin System. The grant funds the continued operation and development of the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) experiment, a cutting-edge neutrino astrophysics observatory located at the South Pole. The key products and services delivered through this award include: Ongoing operation and data collection for the ARA experiment,...
This $384,956 National Science Foundation award under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) supports research at The Ohio State University to quantify birefringence parameters in Antarctic ice. Birefringence causes radio signals from ultra-high energy neutrino interactions to propagate as two rays traveling at different speeds within the ice. Determining the depth-dependent birefringence parameters using measurements from the Askaryan Radio Array station at the South Pole will allow incorporation of this ice property into models. Accounting for birefringence can enhance ongoing searches for the first detection of neutrinos with energies over $10^{17}$ electronvolts by lowering previous search thresholds and clarifying signal polarization and origin. Undergraduate and high school students will participate in interdisciplinary research spanning neutrino astrophysics, glaciology, and antenna engineering through July 2025.
