This National Science Foundation project grant of $333,289 will support research from August 2022 to July 2025 related to adaptive, human-centric coordination of demand-side flexibility at scale in electric power distribution networks. Funded under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), the award to Washington State University will enable the development of analytics and a prototype system to efficiently leverage flexible demand commitments from multiple small consumers in uncertain electric grid environments. The research goals are to represent consumer constraints and interactions to facilitate actionable demand-side flexibility, and to coordinate this flexibility using an open-source distribution systems testbed, evaluating the algorithms with utility data. The results aim to provide guidance on managing aggregator-driven markets and enable high penetration of distributed energy resources and flexible loads through transforming grid operation from load following to supply following.
