This National Science Foundation Project Grant award of $189,036 supports research into electron and neutrino scattering from light nuclei through August 2025. The award is made through the NSF Division of Physics under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049).
The principal investigator at The Ohio State University will investigate the structure of nuclei and nucleons through electron and neutrino scattering experiments. Theoretical calculations will be performed to identify optimal conditions for experiments at the future Electron Ion Collider. Outreach activities will engage undergraduate students and rural communities in northwest Ohio. The research framework developed can describe scattering in any reference frame and will support both current and future experiments at Jefferson Lab and the Electron Ion Collider. Exclusive electron scattering from helium-3 will establish feasibility for collider experiments, and more refined calculations will target promising kinematic regions. Inclusive electron scattering from deuteron asymmetries will also be examined to support Jefferson Lab's program.
