This $187,289 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at The Pennsylvania State University to assess how online community group moderators mitigate information threats. Administered through the NSF's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program, the three-year award's goals are to evaluate platform company support and training for moderators, understand moderators' threat management practices, and examine practices during periods of increased mis/disinformation. As volunteer gatekeepers of local civic information, moderators of Facebook, Nextdoor, and Reddit community groups face challenges responding to information pollution threats with limited tools. This research will inform human-computer interaction, information science, and public policy by expanding knowledge of how to better support volunteer moderators navigating complex local information infrastructures.
