The project will use high-resolution imaging from optical interferometry to study red supergiant stars, which experience...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences project grant of $248,151 will support high resolution optical interferometry studies of interacting binary star systems to better understand stellar evolution and the formation of neutron stars and black holes. Led by Dr. [PI name] at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, the team will use the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy array to collect interferometric data on known symbiotic binary stars over a...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $422,670 Project Grant to the Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy (MIRA) to support a collaborative research effort on "Polarimetric Asteroseismology of Massive Hot Stars". This research project, funded under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program, aims to determine the interior structures of massive hot stars by applying a new technique called polarimetric asteroseismology. The collaboration...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program, with a total funding amount of $441,642, supports research to deepen the understanding of the final stages of stellar evolution, specifically focusing on red giants and their mass-shedding processes. The key objectives of this 2-year research project, which runs from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2026, are to: Employ very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations,...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) provides $532,746 to the Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy (MIRA) to investigate anomalous magnetic fields and chemical abundances of Ap/Bp stars. The research aims to develop a homogeneous catalog of these chemically peculiar stars observed by the SDSS/APOGEE survey, analyzing their stellar parameters, chemical compositions, magnetic field...
- This Project Grant award of $118,673 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) supports a collaborative research project focused on "Polarimetric Asteroseismology of Massive Hot Stars." A team of astronomers from the Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy, Florida Gulf Coast University, SETI Institute, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and University of Wisconsin-Madison, along with international partners, will...
- This Project Grant award of $237,593 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) will fund a collaborative astronomical research project between Georgia State University, Bridgewater State University, and Southern Connecticut State University. The project will conduct speckle imaging observations of approximately 5,000 nearby stars within 40 parsecs of the Sun, focusing on K and M dwarf stars. This will enable the researchers to study the...
- This federal Project Grant award, totaling $145,866, was provided by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to the University of Chicago. The funding will support a collaborative research project to study the internal structures of massive hot stars, the greatest sources of energy and new material in the galaxy, through the application of a new technique called polarimetric asteroseismology. The research team, comprised of astronomers...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) will provide $415,315 to Georgia State University Research Foundation Inc. to precisely measure the sizes and temperatures of stars in nearby double-star systems. The research team will use a specialized telescope called an interferometer to gather high-precision data on the angular diameters of at least 24 stars in 14 binary systems. This data will be combined with...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $714,580 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) federal grant program to Missouri State University. The grant, titled "RUI: UNDERSTANDING THE CORES OF HORIZONTAL BRANCH STARS VIA MESA, GAIA, AND ASTEROSEISMOLOGY," aims to deepen the understanding of horizontal branch stars, a critical phase in stellar evolution. The research team will use observations and advanced modeling techniques to probe the internal...
This $525,731 National Science Foundation project grant will support the creation of precision models for a reference set of Mira variable stars. The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology will analyze archival data spanning several years from multiple space missions, along with recent observations, to provide fundamental parameters for each star. These parameters include variability periods, bolometric fluxes, radii, masses, luminosities, effective temperatures and distances. The work will address questions about dominant pulsation modes, nuances in the period-luminosity relationship based on chemical subtype and mass-loss history, and detailed atmospheric behavior as a function of phase for molecules found in and above stellar photospheres. Most observations will come from the Palomar Testbed Interferometer using H and K bands, supplemented by TESS, AAVSO and AFOEV data. Bolometric fluxes will be determined using 2MASS, COBE, MSX and WISE data. Distances will use Gaia data. Additional photometry will come from a dedicated 20-inch telescope. This award falls under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), which aims to strengthen the nation's scientific enterprise through increasing scientific knowledge and understanding of major problems.
