This National Science Foundation Project Grant award of $444,772 provides funding from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2025 to study the evolution of magnetic complexity in old sun-like stars under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). Principal investigators Metcalfe and Van Saders from the University of Hawaii at Manoa will take polarized spectra of 12 stars using the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument at the Large Binocular Telescope and the Las Cumbres Observatory's Network of Robotic Echelle Spectrographs. Follow-up magnetic field maps will be obtained with the Echelle Spectropolarimetric Device for the Observation of Stars on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The research aims to improve understanding of how stars age by determining when and how they transition from periods of magnetic activity to inactivity. Broader impacts include a 15-week seminar and summer teacher program. Findings on stellar magnetism properties will inform theoretical models and long-term space weather predictions.
