The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, through its Office of Sponsored Research, will characterize the composition and features of plankton and fish...
- This federal Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) provides $800,000 to the University of Kansas Center for Research Inc. over a 3-year period from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2027. The award aims to improve understanding of what constrains the geographic distributions of species, both currently and under future climate change scenarios. The project will integrate demographic methods into species distribution models (SDMs) to...
- This $1,599,142 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports research titled "DISES: Pathways and Constraints to Adaptation in Coastal Social-Environmental Systems" conducted by Stanford University from September 1, 2021 through August 31, 2025. The grant funds research on adaptation challenges facing coastal communities in relation to environmental variability and change. Key activities include nearshore oceanographic monitoring,...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $524,000 will support the development of network-based models to evaluate functional biodiversity responses to climate change and species invasions in marine biological communities. Funded under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), this award reflects NSF's mission to promote biological sciences research and strengthen the scientific enterprise. Specifically, researchers at the University of California, Davis will leverage long-term...
- The University of California Irvine was awarded a $492,382 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences. The grant falls under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which aims to expand fundamental knowledge of the integrated Earth system through basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Specifically, the grant will fund research from December 2021 through November 2024 to predict impacts of coastal species redistribution in a changing climate....
- This Project Grant award, funded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences Program (CFDA 47.049), supports collaborative research between the University of California - Merced and the University of Alaska Fairbanks to reconstruct the dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems. The $112,243 award, spanning May 2025 to August 2027, aims to uncover how marine communities have responded to climate change and resource exploitation in the past, focusing on the...
- This $548,713 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports research to understand the impacts of global warming and ocean acidification on Rocky Intertidal ecosystems. The project combines controlled laboratory studies, field experiments, and modeling to investigate how shifting environmental conditions and loss of foundation species affect ecosystem functioning in these communities. The research integrates opportunities for ecological and...
- This $137,133 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) supports collaborative research by the University of California, Merced and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The research aims to reconstruct the interactions and dynamics of ancient marine ecosystems, focusing on the evolution of large marine organisms like baleen whales during periods of climate change and resource exploitation. The project will...
- This $1,599,937 National Science Foundation project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports research at the University of California, Davis and Humboldt State University from July 2021 through June 2026. The grant funds ecological and social science research to develop a socio-environmental systems framework for informing coastal habitat restoration decisions under climate change. At UC Davis, the grant supports coordination of scuba diving research at multiple northern...
This two-year, $638,646 National Science Foundation project grant aims to uncover the drivers of marine metapopulation synchrony and resilience under climate change through the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). Led by the University of Kansas Center for Research, Inc., the grantee will combine emerging quantitative methods with large-scale fisheries and environmental monitoring data to identify biological and environmental features preventing large-scale declines in species abundance currently. The research will also determine if this resilience will remain under future climate regimes by developing data-driven mathematical approaches. In addition, the principal investigator will train and involve underrepresented minority and first-generation students in cutting-edge statistical analyses applied to ocean data science. This work seeks to help shift empirical research from describing synchrony in population and environment time series towards understanding mechanisms underlying observed synchrony patterns. Insights gained could aid understanding and anticipating large-scale ecosystem changes and services provided.
