This $546,385 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070) will support the development of a machine learning framework for training models across hospitals to address screening and treatment disparities in breast cancer. Specifically, the grant will fund research at Stanford University from September 2022 to August 2026 to create a fair federated representation learning algorithm and framework that can train embedding vectors jointly across multiple sites without sharing patient data. This aims to mitigate both model and data biases in machine learning for healthcare. In addition to developing the algorithmic and theoretical foundations, the project will build and release open source software. Sub-awardee OSF Healthcare System will provide clinical expertise, assist with regulatory aspects of the research, and provide access to its data with appropriate privacy safeguards.
