Dr. Jeremy R. Patterson was awarded a $180,000 National Science Foundation Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship to research dynamic flow channeling through complex fracture networks under oscillatory flow conditions at Rice University from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2024. This Project Grant, funded through NSF's Geosciences program under the CFDA number 47.050, will support the development of new methods to better understand how subsurface flows are concentrated through interconnected networks of rock fractures. As part of this work, Dr. Patterson will analyze previously collected data from the Mirror Lake fractured rock site using fully-coupled hydromechanical modeling to show how the hydraulic backbone supporting subsurface flows is dynamic and changes with the timescale of hydraulic testing. The research will provide an improved framework for fracture flow and transport modeling to reduce risk in fractured groundwater systems. Outreach activities will also include building an educational tool and video for Houston Independent School District classrooms to expose students to groundwater resources and fracture impacts.
