The Regents of the University of California at Riverside received a $501,641 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (47.049) program to develop novel plasmonic chiral superstructures using magnetic assembly of hybrid magnetic/plasmonic nanoparticles. Professor Yin and his team will explore how to create inherent chirality, or handedness, in nanostructures by assembling hybrid nanoparticles containing magnetic oxides and noble metals in magnetic fields. The magnetic component allows for assembly into larger structures with desired handedness, transferring this property to the noble metal components and producing substantial chirality-dependent optical responses. This could enable more effective chemical and mechanical sensors as well as anti-counterfeiting devices. Funding will also support outreach to promote research-based STEM learning for K-12 through undergraduate students. The award period is September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2025.
