This $480,000 National Science Foundation project grant supports the development of bottom-up synthesis, purification, and investigation of one-dimensional graphene nanoribbon-based quantum materials at the University of California, Berkeley from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025. Professor Felix Fischer and his students will rationally design, manufacture, and characterize exotic quantum phenomena emerging from electron-electron interactions in graphene nanoribbons. The synthetic products are expected to exhibit novel physical properties extending beyond two-dimensional graphene, such as tunable bandgaps, photoemission, delocalized spin-states, coherent magnetic spin-chains, and symmetry-protected topological states tailored by real-space structural parameters. This work falls under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), which supports increasing scientific knowledge and understanding of major problems through the progress of mathematical and physical sciences.
