Professor Amit Basu of Brown University will receive $450,000 through a three-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemistry under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). The grant will support research to better characterize carbohydrate-carbohydrate interactions at the molecular and supramolecular levels using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry. Specifically, the project aims to identify structural features contributing to interactions between galactose, glucose, and sulfated galactose found in the myelin sheath, as well as determine associated thermodynamic parameters. Undergraduate and graduate students involved in the research will gain skills applicable to careers in academia, industry, and government. Outreach efforts will engage local schools to share scientific knowledge and tools used in the study.
