The project aims to elucidate the chemical mechanisms that control the assembly and properties of these nanoscale materials, with...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $660,000 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program to Professors Jillian Dempsey and Yosuke Kanai at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The grant supports their research to study how defects on the surface of semiconductor nanocrystals impact energy flows, and how such defects can be repaired through selective chemical reactions. The work combines experimental investigations with advanced...
- This $540,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) supports Professors Smith and Schleife of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in studying a new synthetic approach for manufacturing diverse classes of nanocrystals. The research aims to develop low-cost nanocrystal production methods that can be safely and cost-effectively utilized in classrooms and educational laboratories. Key focus areas include...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry awarded the University of Texas at Dallas a $450,000 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop smart photochromic electronic devices. Professor Michael C. Biewer and students will synthesize novel light-activated organic semiconducting materials incorporating a bicyclic aziridine photochromic unit. They will attach this unit as a pendant group to donor-acceptor-donor small molecules based on...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Chemistry awarded a $555,000 Project Grant to Yale University to examine fundamental redox reactivity at the surfaces of nanoparticles. Over a 3-year period from September 2024 to August 2027, the project led by Professor James Mayer will investigate how hydrogen atoms and other species bind to and transfer from the irregular surfaces of nanoparticles made of materials like tungsten oxide, iron carbide, and cobalt phosphide. The research aims...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemistry provides $464,215 to Professor Lauren Webb of the University of Texas at Austin from August 15, 2022 to July 31, 2025. The funding supports research at the bio/abiotic interface to develop biomimetic sensors, catalysts, and materials. Specifically, Professor Webb and her students will combine synthetic chemistry techniques and advanced analytics to study how proteins function in non-biological contexts. They aim to...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $439,063 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to Professor Alina Schimpf of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The funding supports the development of new methods to synthesize and modify nanoscale materials known as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). This research aims to understand the role of precursors and growth conditions in the formation of different TMD crystal phases, which...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $482,500 Project Grant to the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to support research exploring chemically functionalized polymers for nanoscale structures and interfaces from November 1, 2022 to October 31, 2025. Professor Todd Emrick and his team will work to advance fundamental aspects of polymeric and sustainable chemistry by discovering unique combinations of polymers and...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) supports a study led by Professor Kristie Koski at the University of California, Davis. The $479,592 award, effective August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2028, will fund research on a new semiconductor nanomaterial called colloidal silicon telluride (Si2Te3). The project aims to develop a better understanding of how to synthesize and control the properties of these...
- This Project Grant award of $164,302 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences Federal Grant Program (CFDA 47.049) supports research at the University of Pennsylvania aimed at enabling the low-temperature synthesis of ordered intermetallic nanomaterials. The principal investigator, Dr. Anthony Shoji Hall, will investigate pathways to precisely control atom movement within solid materials at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. This will substantially...
Professor Amy Walker of the University of Texas at Dallas will use a $480,072 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program to develop solution-based chemical synthesis methods for semiconductor nanowires and other nanostructures on surfaces. Specifically, Professor Walker and her students will refine and expand their semiconductor nanowire deposition on micropatterned substrates (SENDOM) approach to enable the controlled, surface-directed growth of complex metal chalcogenide nanowires and heterostructures in situ. This will include developing SENDOM for core-shell, mixed-metal, and mixed-chalcogenide nanowires. Mechanistic studies of how nanowire growth rate and composition are affected by precursor and surface chemistries will provide insights to optimize SENDOM. Fabricating nanowire-based field-effect transistors and memories using SENDOM will also be demonstrated. The grant period is from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2025.
