- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Environmental Biology (CFDA 47.074 - Biological Sciences) awarded $244,394 to the University of Alaska Southeast on August 1, 2025, for a three-year collaborative research project examining the bioavailability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from glaciers. The research delivers scientific products through the development and application of advanced analytical methodologies, including a Respiratory Carbon Recovery...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), will investigate the photochemical breakdown of marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its impact on the global carbon cycle. The $683,778 award, valid from July 2023 to June 2026, will focus on studying the production rates and quantum yields of one and two-carbon photoproducts, such as carbon monoxide, dissolved inorganic carbon, formaldehyde, and...
- This $2,800,000 Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Congressionally Identified Awards and Projects program (CFDA 11.469) will establish a Center for Characterizing the Impacts of Environmental Contaminant Stressors on Freshwater and Marine Aquatic Life in Alaska at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). The key objectives are to 1) understand the mechanistic impacts of environmental drivers on aquatic life, 2) investigate the sublethal...
The National Science Foundation awarded a $149,999 Project Grant to the University of Alaska Anchorage under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049) to investigate the aquatic photochemical pathways and photoproducts of emerging contaminants in sub-arctic environments. Drs. Tomco and Redman at the University of Alaska Anchorage will study the environmental breakdown rates of three contaminants found in Alaskan waterways as caused by sunlight. They will determine the individual contributions of dissolved organic matter, hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, and triplet excitation states to the breakdown processes. The temperature dependence of each process will be compared at 4, 12, and 20 degrees Celsius. Photoproducts resulting from each process will be profiled using high resolution mass spectrometry and non-targeted analytical approaches. This research is expected to provide a better fundamental understanding of the environmental drivers for photochemical processes in sub-arctic aquatic systems.
