The grant supports basic research to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system through expanded knowledge of atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Specifically, the university will conduct collaborative research to...
- This $409,233 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports collaborative research to connect seasonal to millennial timescales through a new 4D variational framework for assimilating paleoclimate proxy data. The key products and services to be delivered include: Developing and implementing a new data assimilation approach to integrate high-resolution (monthly to decadal) paleoclimate proxies, such as coral records and sediment...
- This Project Grant award, valued at $269,066, was provided by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Southern California (USC) Department of Contracts and Grants. The project aims to develop and implement a new 4D variational framework for multiscale proxy assimilation, leveraging recent data syntheses of paleoclimate proxy observations. The goal is to connect seasonal to millennial timescales and ocean to atmosphere in climate modeling and...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) awarded a $783,920 project grant to Colorado State University for the period of January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028. The grant supports collaborative research to improve machine learning-based climate emulation models used for weather and climate simulation. Specifically, the research aims to: Understand how well climate emulators capture the underlying physics of weather and climate systems, particularly their ability to...
- This $941,193 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports research to further develop a theory on the invariance of cloud size distribution under varying climate conditions. The research aims to evaluate whether certain cloud properties, such as the relationship between cloud size and number, remain consistent despite changes in atmospheric climate and chemical composition. The work seeks to understand the underlying physical mechanisms...
- The National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) awarded a $319,907 Project Grant to the University of Maryland, College Park to develop a machine learning "emulator" that can quickly and efficiently predict water isotope patterns in fully-coupled global climate models. The goal is to build a smart shortcut to improve the incorporation of water isotope data into complex climate models, enhancing scientists' ability to study past climate patterns and forecast future...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $877,305 to the University of Southern California from September 2021 through August 2024 to develop PaleoCube capabilities. PaleoCube will enable cloud-based access to paleoclimatology data and tools. The funding will support developing cloud-based infrastructure and services for storing, analyzing, and visualizing paleoclimate data. Northern Arizona University will receive a sub-award as part...
This three-year $719,730 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports research to constrain cloud and convective parameterizations in climate models using paleoclimate data assimilation. The awardee, William Paterson University of New Jersey, will conduct fully-coupled, isotope-enabled climate simulations for the Last Glacial Maximum, Mid-Holocene, and Pre-Industrial periods using an ensemble of cloud and convective parameter sets. Paleoclimate data assimilation will then be performed on the perturbed parameter ensemble using sea surface temperature and water isotope proxies. The resulting posterior parameter sets providing the best match to proxy data will be used in present-day and doubled carbon dioxide experiments to calculate a narrowed estimate of equilibrium climate sensitivity. The research aims to advance model representations of cloud and convective processes by integrating paleoclimate data and climate model simulations.
