Project Grant 2202812
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $717,645.00 to the University of Washington to conduct research aimed at improving scientific understanding of the physical and dynamical processes that govern year-to-year changes in tropical cold point tropopause (CPT) temperature. The research team will analyze satellite observations, atmospheric reanalyses, and climate model simulations to investigate how tropical CPT temperature...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), provides $486,913 to the University of Washington for collaborative research investigating glacial-interglacial variability in tropospheric reactive halogens. Specifically, the research will examine how blowing snow on sea ice can explain increases in sodium ions observed in Greenland and Antarctic ice cores over glacial-interglacial timescales. It...
- This Project Grant award of $538,591 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports research to understand the relationship between tropical sea surface temperatures and the temperature of the tropical tropopause layer (TTL), which acts as a gateway for water vapor and ozone entering the stratosphere. The research involves conducting idealized modeling experiments using different climate models to reconcile two competing theories for how tropical sea surface...
- The Regents of the University of Colorado received a $387,866 project grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences to conduct research titled "Collaborative Research: Energetic Particle Precipitation from the Magnetosphere and Effects on Ozone Dynamics in the Mesosphere and Stratosphere." The research will be performed from January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2024. The project aims to advance understanding of how energetic particle...
- The University of Washington was awarded a three-year, $533,419 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences. The grant supports research titled "Precipitation and Coalesence Scavenging in Shallow Southern Ocean Clouds" under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The Geosciences program aims to expand fundamental knowledge of the integrated Earth system through basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. This Project...
- This Project Grant award for $797,237.00 was provided by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Utah to advance understanding of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), a prominent mode of variability in the tropical stratospheric winds. The key objectives are to better understand the bias in modeling the strength of the QBO in the lower stratosphere and the inability of models to capture the QBO's influence on the stratospheric polar vortex. The...
- The University of Washington was awarded a two-year, $232,025 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The grant will support research into the equatorial transport of nitrous oxide from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. As part of its mission to strengthen the national scientific enterprise's understanding of the integrated Earth system, the Geosciences program aims to expand fundamental knowledge of...
- The Space Science Institute was awarded a $534,010 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences to conduct research titled "Collaborative Research: Energetic Particle Precipitation from the Magnetosphere and Effects on Ozone Dynamics in the Mesosphere and Stratosphere" from January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2024. Under this award, the Space Science Institute will collaborate with researchers to study how energetic particle...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences Project Grant award to Colorado State University (CSU) is for $254,826 over 3 years, starting on July 1, 2023. The award is funded under the NSF Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which supports basic research to expand fundamental knowledge and understanding of the integrated Earth system. The project focuses on examining the relationship between the trade wind inversion layer and the seasonal development of...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $695,977 project grant to the University of Washington for research titled "Nearshore Plume Dynamics: Airborne Observations and Modeling of Surf-Shelf Exchange." The three-year award runs from June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024 under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The University of Washington will utilize the funding to conduct airborne observations and modeling of the exchange between surf zone and continental shelf waters. This work will...
This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $622,435 supports research into stratosphere-troposphere exchange of ozone and its changes over time. Funded under the Geosciences program within the NSF Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, the award will examine observational estimates of ozone exchange based on satellite data through 2025. The University of Washington will calculate ozone exchange using methodology accounting for tropical upwelling and extra-tropical downwelling. Models and sensors including CLOUDSAT, CALYPSO, MODIS and COSMIC will estimate heating rates and density to quantify exchange uncertainties. Climate simulations will evaluate how the Brewer-Dobson circulation and rising tropical tropopause may impact future exchange. Outreach and training for two graduate students are also included. The research aims to advance understanding of ozone sources and evolution, in line with the Geosciences program goal of expanding Earth system knowledge through atmospheric research support.
