This three-year National Science Foundation project grant of $1,309,760 will fund research into the relationship between tropical Pacific climate influences and atmospheric blocking events across different timescales. Specifically, the University of Hawaii at Manoa will investigate how El Niño-Southern Oscillation diversity and changes in the tropical Pacific mean state impact blocking characteristics and extreme weather event frequency in observations, past climate experiments, and new high-resolution climate model runs. Researchers will develop metrics to reduce uncertainty in model projections of externally forced changes to blocking given skill in simulating tropical Pacific conditions. As part of the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), this award supports basic research to further understanding of the integrated Earth system. Outreach efforts include developing an online game module to raise public awareness of distinct ENSO impacts.
