The Ozaukee County received a $264,208.80 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service on January 26, 2021 to support native tree planting in the Ozaukee County Hawthorne Hills County Park project area through May 30, 2025. The funding supports the Cooperative Forestry Assistance federal grant program, which aims to assist in advancing forest resource management and conservation on nonfederal rural and forest lands through activities such as producing and distributing genetically improved tree seeds and seedlings. Specifically, the awarded funds will support Ozaukee County's efforts to plant native trees in the Hawthorne Hills County Park through May 2025, in alignment with the program's goals of promoting sustainable forest management.
