The National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry awarded Vanderbilt University $524,592 under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049) to support research exploring mechanochemical control of synthesis and applications to catalysis from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2025. Professor Timothy Hanusa of Vanderbilt University will investigate chemical reactions that can occur through grinding or ball milling with little to no solvent, aiming to develop more environmentally friendly and sustainable reaction methodologies. Students will gain experience with mechanochemical methodology as an alternative to traditional solvent-based synthetic chemistry approaches. In addition to chemical research, the project also includes educational and outreach efforts to broaden participation in science for women and underrepresented groups through partnerships with historically black colleges and universities.
