Alex Mironenko of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will develop minimally empirical reactive interatomic potentials from first principles for accelerating chemical reaction simulations and materials discoveries under this $760,680 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry. The funding supports the project "Minimally Empirical, First Principles-Derived Reactive Potential for Accelerated Simulations of Chemically Interacting Systems" from June 15, 2022 to May 31, 2025. Mironenko will generalize a minimally empirical reactive potential methodology, demonstrated for the simplest hydrogen clusters, to main-group elements containing S and P valence orbitals. This will incorporate required physics at low cost using an overlooked "chemical pseudopotential" theory. The University of Illinois team will implement the method in general-purpose, parallelizable open-access software to compute reactive potential energy surfaces efficiently. They will apply the technique to study the mechanism of an organocatalytic C-C coupling reaction of formaldehyde relevant to renewable energy production.
