Professor Nathaniel Szymczak of the University of Michigan will use a $525,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry to study new strategies for constructing multifunctional catalysts capable of making and breaking carbon bonds. The grant, awarded under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), will support the development of transition metal compounds containing multiple reactive sites to advance the basic science needed for rational design of molecular catalysts for sustainable chemical production. Professor Szymczak and his research team will pursue synthetic strategies to prepare Lewis acid-appended ligand scaffolds and transition metal complexes for multi-point binding and regioselective functionalization of organic substrates. The three-year award period began August 1, 2022.
