David Sarlah of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will utilize $514,006 in funding from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program to support research in innovative strategies for the complex, total synthesis of naturally occurring molecules from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2025. Specifically, Sarlah's project will identify novel disconnections and underutilized chemical processes to enable more rapid and controlled preparation of desired molecular structures in fewer steps, with a focus on terpenoid-based structures. This work aims to streamline access to natural product core structures in a stereodivergent manner and serve as late-stage templates for further elaboration. Outcomes will advance synthesis capabilities across agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and materials science applications. The award also supports science and STEM education and outreach activities for students and local communities.
