This $386,673 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemistry, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), will support research at Amherst College to develop and analyze a new nanoparticle-based system with potential as quantum bits (qubits) that can be initiated with light. Jacob Olshansky of the Chemistry Department and Jonathan Friedman of the Physics and Astronomy Department will characterize nanoparticle-molecule conjugates using time-resolved optical and spin resonance measurements to evaluate their utility for hosting photogenerated spin qubit pairs (SQPs) without requiring expensive millikelvin cooling devices. The researchers aim to demonstrate spin-specific addressability and spin-qubit manipulations on multi-spin systems hosted by zinc oxide nanoparticles. This work could provide new materials and techniques for exploring SQPs in quantum information science applications. The award period is from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2025.
