Marquette University received a $527,182 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Chemistry under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to support the development of new catalytic methods for organic synthesis based on the activation of carbon-carbon and carbon-nitrogen bonds. Professor Chae Yi of Marquette University will investigate the scope and mechanistic aspects of ruthenium-catalyzed processes employing redox-active catechol ligands, and explore their synthetic applications for reforming biomass-derived organic commodities. The award will also fund summer internships for undergraduate students from local STEM programs to gain research experience in Professor Yi's laboratory, as well as outreach efforts to promote STEM careers among students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in the current workforce. The three-year award period runs from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2025.
