This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences provides $435,207 under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to support the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site: Combinatorics and Coding Theory in the Tropics. The REU Site is a collaborative effort between the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce, Williams College, and East Tennessee State University to offer undergraduate students research experiences in combinatorics and coding theory over three summer periods from 2023 through 2026. Faculty mentors will lead open-ended mathematical research projects for 10 undergraduate participants and two peer mentors each summer for nine weeks. Research areas include algebraic coding theory, probabilistic combinatorics, discrete geometry, and classical combinatorics. The program aims to increase diversity and inclusion in the mathematical sciences workforce by ensuring at least 50% of participants are female, 40% are from underrepresented groups, 40% are first-generation college students, and 50% attend schools with limited research opportunities. The University of Puerto Rico in Ponce serves as the sub-awardee responsible for administering the REU Site program.
