The University of South Dakota received a $349,990 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program to operate a Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site from June 1, 2022 through May 31, 2025.

The Molecules Meet Materials REU Site will provide research experience for 10 undergraduate students annually over summer terms in 2022 through 2024. Students will pursue collaborative research projects focusing on chemistry at interfaces, using spectroscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and computational methods. All participants will engage in professional development training emphasizing science communication and graduate school preparation. The Site aims to broaden participation in STEM fields by recruiting from Tribal Colleges and primarily undergraduate institutions. Students will undertake individual research projects related to materials science and interfacial chemistry applications. The University of South Dakota will operate the Site to advance undergraduate research training and workforce development in the mathematical and physical sciences.
