This $227,619 National Science Foundation Project Grant will support the development of a culturally relevant immersive virtual learning environment to advance spatial computational thinking skills and career awareness among upper elementary Latinx students. Funded through the NSF's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), the project aims to design Minecraft: Education Edition experiences that incorporate bilingual visual programming functions and culturally aligned content. Participants will engage in spatial algorithm design and exploration of computationally intensive careers in fields such as robotics and geospatial systems. The University of Florida awardee will conduct design-based research and usability testing from June 2022 to May 2026. Findings will inform iterative refinement of the learning environment and assessment of impacts on students, parents, and college mentors. The project deliverables, including lesson plans and professional development resources, will be shared nationally to support computer science education integration in elementary classrooms.
