This $729,372 National Science Foundation project grant supports the development of podcast-based science curriculum resources to broaden participation in STEM fields among blind, visually impaired and sighted upper elementary students. Funded under the NSF's Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers program, the three-year award to Oregon State University will engage students in listening to and producing podcasts featuring blind and disabled scientists. Teachers will guide students in using podcast episodes as a basis for creating their own science podcasts, developing ideas, interviewing scientists, writing scripts and editing audio. The final freely available web-based materials are designed to increase STEM career awareness and interest while normalizing participation of persons with disabilities in science. Evaluation will explore how podcast technology can support science learning and foster empathy and "possible selves" in STEM for blind students.
