This three-year, $457,778 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences aims to advance understanding of new particle formation in the marine boundary layer and its impact on cloud condensation nuclei and cloud microphysics. Specifically, the awardee, Washington University in University City, Missouri, will analyze existing field measurements from various Atlantic and Pacific Ocean campaigns to identify conditions conducive to new particle formation and the main drivers. State-of-the-science large eddy simulation modeling using constrained by observations will investigate formation mechanisms. Additional simulations will then quantify the impact of boundary layer new particle formation on cloud condensation nuclei and regional marine boundary layer clouds. Support is also provided for a postdoctoral researcher. This award supports the goals of the NSF Geosciences program's basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences.
