This $158,416 National Science Foundation project grant supports the development of an adaptive online assessment platform to improve introductory physics instruction. Awarded under the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education program (CFDA 47.076), the funding enables investigators at Iowa State University and Purdue University to create diagnostic tools that provide individualized feedback to help students succeed in high-enrollment physics courses. Specifically, the collaborators will develop adaptive tests covering mechanics topics and provide associated data visualizations. This will allow instructors to identify skills requiring additional attention for all students or specific students needing help. Workshops are planned to train educators on platform use. The tools are intended to evaluate course effectiveness, address inequities, and support creation of adaptive assessments for other STEM fields. The three-year award period began October 1, 2022.
